Lyric Announces 2009-2010 Season
Lyric Music Theater Announces
From Screen to Stage: Lyric's 57th Season, Opening with the Broadway Sensation
The Producers
March 16, 2009
South Portland, ME: Lyric Music Theater is proud to announce
From Screen to Stage: Lyric's 57th season. Lyric’s exciting 2009-2010 selections include
The Producers,
Disney's High School Musical On Stage, and
Guys and Dolls – all of which were adaptations of or were adapted to Hollywood silver-screen hits.
Opening the season will be the hilarious Mel Brooks musical
The Producers, under the able direction of Lyric veteran Michael Donovan. Commercial productions of
The Producers won a record-breaking 12 Tony awards and broke the record for the largest single-day box office gross in theatre history. The well-known story, adapted by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan from Brooks' 1968 film of the same name, with lyrics by Brooks and music by Brooks and Glen Kelly concerns two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop which unexpectedly turns out to be successful. Don’t miss the Lyric premiere of this international hit of the Broadway stage.
Following the craziness of Bialystock and Bloom, Lyric is proud to present another mega-hit,
Disney's High School Musical On Stage. Have you heard of
High School Musical? Your kids have! This rock-and-roll mega-franchise, adapted from the Disney Channel original movie, has now spawned multiple other movies, merchandise lines and music videos. It chronicles the trials and tribulations of life and love in high school, centered (of course!) around the annual school musical. Most importantly,
High School Musical provides a wonderful opportunity for families, kids and adults of all ages to enjoy the theatre, whether as performers or audience members. Come see what everyone is talking about, for the first time at Lyric Music Theatre.
Finally, take a step back in time with the uplifting classic,
Guys and Dolls. This Tony-award winning story of gambling, gamesmanship and unrequited love, features music and lyrics written by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows.
Guys and Dolls features such well-known songs as "Adelaide's Lament,” "Luck Be a Lady” and "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat.” Directed by Maine theatre icons Vince and Denise Knue, Guys and Dolls will have you tapping your feet all the way home.
In addition to its three mainstage shows, Lyric will continue its tradition of cabaret nights, special guest performances and a to-be-announced non-musical play in Spring 2010.
